Toy Racing Cars
Introducing "My First Car"!
I first made these wooden racing cars for my youngest (now 10), then all his little friends - and now by popular request, for all the parents with a love of seeing their children playing with traditional, solid, wooden toys that last a lifetime.
These are not flimsy little things - they are a satisfying weight for kids - at around 430gms, each car is 220mm long and 130mm wide. As a father of four very active kids, I over-engineer all my toys - I use 13mm dowels for axles and combine these with sturdy 57mm wheels. Made from salvaged "four b' twos" from demolished houses in my local area, these cars are strong enough for toddlers to lean on, push, roll, crash and do all the destructive things that kids do when they play!
I use recycled pine, child-safe paints and Alpine Ash and Tassie Oak for the wheel - axle. I also occasionally do some unpainted natural timber versions on request. - check out this under Variants. I did one in Birds-Eye Stringybark to match the timber of an outdoor verandah BBQ / shelving installation commissioned by some proud grandparents.
The styling? Well, I've always loved Alfas and these remind me of them. They're about as aerodynamic as I can manage without a wind tunnel - they'll see off anything else in the hallway corridor...... and unlike my three Alfas, these come with a lifetime warranty.
And because it's "My First Car" - each one is beautifully gift boxed, signed, numbered and dated.
