Rhythm Shakers
After breaking too many commercial rhythm shakers in the heat of the moment on stage, I started designing my own - this is the result! These are hand-made from 38mm copper cylinders, finished with Australian native timbers - usually Red Gum, Ironbark or Coastal Tea Tree caps.
Available in three tones, the tuned sound is driven by mixing varying sizes of stainless steel bearings. The copper is left uncoated to allow that funky aged patina to develop. Alternatively, a quick buff with some 0000 grade fine steel wool will bring up that glowing pink copper sheen. Ground down to around 100mm, the sound is very intense. By changing your shaking style from side-to-side or end-to-end, the tone alters using either the copper or timber faces.
There are three tone options: Light #2 uses a smaller sized bearing mix for a lighter, softer sound; Medium #3 uses a slightly heavier mix for a general purpose sound; and Heavy #4 produces a fuller cut-through percussion effect.
